Summary

Gambit królowej to przepiękna książka o samotności i przyjaźni, rywalizacji i współpracy, zagubieniu i poszukiwaniu sensu życia。

This book really draws you into its world。 I saw rooks and pawns and bishops and queens moving over a 64 square board in my head。 Always, it took me quite some time to reconnect with the real world whenever I lifted my gaze from the pages - the chess board remaining in my imagination like an afterimage。 This is probably one of the most unique and interesting novels I have ever read。

If you love chessboard games。 This is the book for you。 Very entertaining。

Surprisingly good! Free with audible plus, the book has a strong female MC。 A devastating prodigy, with devastating addictions。 The uniquely feminine issues Harmon faces were fantastic details。 I had to double check the author was male。 The main character was very relatable。 Reminds me of Hikaru no Go。

I watched the Netflix series first and loved it。 Reading the book I could see the characters and enjoyed it almost as much as the series。 I don’t play chess and don’t want to but I do have a better understanding of it now。 I should have been bored but I never was?! Great writing。

Beth is an amazing chess player! I am not a chess player so this book was high level intensity chess playing。 I actually watched the series before reading the book, which I normally don’t do, but I think that helped with following the story (meaning, reading and getting through the endless chess moves/terms I don’t understand)。 There were some differences, as in all book to movie/series but I honestly can’t say which I liked more。 If you know chess you will enjoy this book。

I blasted through it。 I was so excited about it that I immediately flipped on the Netflix series afterward。 And the series is just so much better。

The Queens Gambit rocks! This book details the life of an Orphan who becomes a Chess World Champion! She battles her demons primarily alone as she rises in the Chess world。 Interesting storyline and find Beth a believable genius, adapting her eidetic memory to Chess。 Fun read!

I can definitely see why this book was made in to Netflix series - it was so compelling even though I didn't understand any of the chess moves, which was about 1/4 of the book。 Beth was such a hard person, which I suppose will happen when you're orphaned at 8 years old and live in an orphanage。 But she was also written in a way that you could dislike her and sympathize and root for her all at the same time。 I can definitely see why this book was made in to Netflix series - it was so compelling even though I didn't understand any of the chess moves, which was about 1/4 of the book。 Beth was such a hard person, which I suppose will happen when you're orphaned at 8 years old and live in an orphanage。 But she was also written in a way that you could dislike her and sympathize and root for her all at the same time。 。。。more

My opinionThere were parts to the story that I felt were really uncomfortable and unnecessary for the storyline。 The story was a bit boring。

Aside from one big scene ((view spoiler)[Jolene (hide spoiler)], this is so true to the series that it's hard to get into。 The library took the book back, not sure if I'll return to it。 Aside from one big scene ((view spoiler)[Jolene (hide spoiler)], this is so true to the series that it's hard to get into。 The library took the book back, not sure if I'll return to it。 。。。more

Of course, I was inspired to read this after watching the amazing series on Netflix。 The show actually followed the book very closely, and I was surprised by how many lines from the book were used verbatim in the show。 It's such a good story: the orphan girl who shocks the world in a game dominated by men。I thought the last half of the book got a little bit bogged down by Tevis going into A LOT of detail about the specific chess moves made in each game。 The standard reader isn't going to be able Of course, I was inspired to read this after watching the amazing series on Netflix。 The show actually followed the book very closely, and I was surprised by how many lines from the book were used verbatim in the show。 It's such a good story: the orphan girl who shocks the world in a game dominated by men。I thought the last half of the book got a little bit bogged down by Tevis going into A LOT of detail about the specific chess moves made in each game。 The standard reader isn't going to be able to picture the whole game in their mind like Beth can! I also thought the last couple of of scenes were more impactful in the show。Still, I enjoyed cracking this open every night! 。。。more

The chess stuff is surprisingly exciting and the drug and alcohol addiction feels as real and sad as it should。

I read this book initially because I adore the limited series, and wanted to read the book it was inspired by。 This book was incredibly gripping- Tevis has tight control over tone, pace and plot which is utterly exhilarating to read, as it details Beth's ruthless and ambitious climb to the top。 I am not a chess player, and understand very little about the game- but the dramatisation of chess which was so subtly and amazingly done in the TV show was also incredible here。 However, instead of the u I read this book initially because I adore the limited series, and wanted to read the book it was inspired by。 This book was incredibly gripping- Tevis has tight control over tone, pace and plot which is utterly exhilarating to read, as it details Beth's ruthless and ambitious climb to the top。 I am not a chess player, and understand very little about the game- but the dramatisation of chess which was so subtly and amazingly done in the TV show was also incredible here。 However, instead of the use of body language and music to create the sense of tensions, successions and losses within a game, Tevis skilfully recreates Beth's thought patterns in ways that reflect her mood, varying from tension, panic, power, precision, and my favourite, one where she describes the pieces as having 'heaviness' and 'comfort'。 I really enjoyed the internal monologue of her as a master player that you simply cannot see in the series- it added a sort of hidden facet that we miss in the show, where you're just watching instead of up close and personal and in the game。 The comparison was interesting, as it is fascinating to compare methods of conveyance of emotion to someone like me with no technical knowledge of the dynamics of the game from purely moves。 Beth in the books is also several years younger, which added a very different dynamic to her interactions。 In the series, I saw much less of a child prodigy narrative, but the Beth of the books appeared so much more like a girl with an extraordinary talent, riding on it to get by in life, admittedly soaring to the top of her game, but who was really still very young, traumatised and very alone in life apart from that。 Something I missed was the portrayal of Beth's character development, which I feel the show elaborated on really beautifully。 Tevis' plot is so fast, and things happen almost factually a lot- the narrative seems quite emotionally detached。 However, Beth is also a very emotionally detached character, so seeing things narrated through her eyes would make for a less intense narrative。 Like with the chess game portions of the book, it is very much the story told through Beth, as opposed to something one watches and observes, like in the series。 As viewers, we are able to see the character of Beth change and grow, because we are on the outside, and can experience the music and proxemics and shots to form an overall picture。 The book is completely different; we are plunged headfirst into the tight, inward-looking and meticulous head of Beth, and we see what it is like from her point of view on her climb to chess mastery。 。。。more

Only read this if you know chess。 Or just watch the show。

I did not expect to be so into a book about chess。 The way this was written made me feel like everything made sense to me about a chess game even though it doesn’t。 Oh, she’s going to give up her knight? OF COURSE! She’s planning on attacking with pawns? DAMN RIGHT SHE IS。 I read this before I watched the show on Netflix and I am so hoping they do it justice。 Great book。

This book had a vulgarity that I found amusing and thought-provoking with a strong, smart, but troubled heroine。 Never has chess been so entertaining!

Beth Harmon has one of the best character arcs I've ever read, I would give this a 4。5 star rating because there are things I think the show does better but still this was such a great book。 The writing was great, the story was phenomenal, the characters too。 This was simply so satisfying and fun to read。 Beth Harmon has one of the best character arcs I've ever read, I would give this a 4。5 star rating because there are things I think the show does better but still this was such a great book。 The writing was great, the story was phenomenal, the characters too。 This was simply so satisfying and fun to read。 。。。more

Did not expect to like this one, but really enjoyed it。 I did listen to the audiobook, so that might have made the elaborate chess scenes more enjoyable。

Wow, the Netflix series really followed the book in the closest book-to-film adaption I've ever seen! Do read this book if you shipped Beth and Benny because I think the book provides a deeper look into that relationship。 It is clear after reading the book that Beth really liked Benny even though he is evasive and difficult to connect with。 I was hoping to get more back-story on Benny from reading the book, but they just lean more into the fact that he gambles to make money。 There were so many i Wow, the Netflix series really followed the book in the closest book-to-film adaption I've ever seen! It really cut me that when Beth called to get Jolene's phone number they mentioned that Mr。 Shaibel was still at the orphanage and Beth didn't give any thought to him, like, literally not a one。 And then they call her to let her know that he has passed and she attends his funeral and sees that he followed her career and she has some more emotion and guilt。 She had so many years to reconnect with him。The writing style was very cut and dry which isn't my preferred style of writing。 It at times seemed more meant to be a screenplay than a book。 There were just many moments I felt could have been elaborated on, but seemed cut short as though it was being edited for time。 。。。more
